What makes you stand out on eBay? What draws your customers in? If you said pictures, then you are probably right. In a sea of like products, you need to make sure that YOUR product catches the buyers’ eye before they get interested in another seller. I recently read an article by Gizmodo.com that has changed the way my listings look.
Gone are the days where you need a professional digital camera to make your listing photos look good. Today, I pretty much stick with my Iphone 5 camera, and with the trick that I’m about to share with you, your photos can look just like the pros with no additional cost. Take a look at the two photos above. They both were taken with the same camera, on the same desk, during the same time of day. Hopefully, you think the picture on the right looks better. To make your photos look like this, you don’t need any fancy software or any additional skills. What you will need is outlined below:
- A computer monitor
- A base to put your item on (I use a small trash can)
- A camera (I use my iPhone)
Here’s how it works:
First, you need to find a background that you like. In the cup picture at the top of the page, there is a background that appears to have blurry lights. This is called bokeh. I recommend Googling that word to find hundreds of photos that would be perfect as a background. OR check out this page that offers 640 bokeh images for free, click HERE
Secondly, you will need some type of base to put your item on. It needs to be high enough that it reaches your computer screen. Additionally, I recommend that you try to find something that is a little reflective. This gives it a nice finish. I use a small trash can, but I’m always on the look out for a paper tray at Goodwill. I think that would work better. Take a look at my setup on the left.
Lastly, you need a camera to take the photo. Again, I use my iPhone, but any camera will do. Don’t worry about getting the picture perfectly in frame. You can always crop the picture with the editing software on your phone.
