Selling What’s Hot Before It’s Hot

by Tristen & Amy OBrien on October 3, 2013

Selling on ebay can feel like a game at times.  The market can quickly go up, and then back down even faster.  Selling the right product at the right time only makes sense, but thats way easier said than done.  Have you ever seen a hot product and thought to yourself, “Man, I really wish I would have started to sell that before the market was flooded with sellers”.  I’m assuming you have, because it happens to everyone!  So how do you find a hot item before it’s hot?  This can be tricky but when you find a winner, the payoff is huge!

Have you ever heard of the HapiFork?  It’s a fork that is supposed to help you lose weight by vibrating if you are eating to fast.  This will give the brain enough time to tell you that you’re actually full.  This is an example of what I’m talking about.  There has been a lot of talk about this HapiFork product in magazines and online forums, but it just recently became available for sale.  Although this item has received a lot of press, it’s still fairly unknown, and for someone who is looking for connected fitness devices, the HapiFork could be really appealing.

As of right now, October 3rd 2013 @ 10am EST, there are no HapiForks on ebay.  The HappiFork originally was on a website called, a funding website to help startups create their products.  It now can be found on the Brookstone website HERE and is available to ship starting Oct 18th.

Here is my point.  Selling new trendy items that you think will be hot before they really are, can make you a lot of money.  Knowing where to look for these items is the key.  I recommend looking at websites like to see what’s up and coming.  Also, just keeping your eye out for new and neat gadgets while you are out in the stores can really help you understand that these items are everywhere.  Let’s take a look at a couple examples that have worked in the past:

1. The Nest Learning Thermostat (found here)- This product caught my eye a while back ago when I was shopping at Lowes.  The gadgety look and feel really drew me in.  It was the first time that I’ve seen something like this before and I instantly wanted one.  For me, the price was a little high so I passed.  Last week I was a my buddies house and I saw that he had one of these installed on his wall.  He showed me all of the cool features and when I told him that I didn’t get it because of the cost, he was flabbergasted.  He told me that he paid nothing to get this device because he was selling them on ebay before they were hot.  He made more than enough money to buy one for himself and have extra cash.

2. Pebble Watch (found here)- This watch is another connected product that allows you to wear a smart device on your wrist.  This is another Kickstarter project that became popular with the early adopters.  As the smart watch niche continued to grow, I was able to start selling them before they were hot.  I found a reseller (BestBuy) who was selling them when everyone else thought they were sold out.  There were other smart watches on the market at the same time, but I was able to use keywords in my listings to pull those buyers in and sell them my product.

These are just two examples of how you can sell a hot item before it’s hot, and reap the benefits monetarily.  Remember, these products are all around you.  Make sure you are keeping your eyes open while you’re in stores, and hopefully you will find a few hot items before they are hot.
