Summer Fun and A $100 eBay Gift Card Giveaway!

by Tristen & Amy OBrien on May 17, 2012

With summer quickly approaching, I thought I would write a blog post that is a little different.  First of all, eBay has been generous enough to give away a $100 gift card to one lucky reader (more on that later), but I wanted to take a different approach to the motives for selling on eBay.  I sometimes get caught up in writing about growing your eBay business, and how to take it to the next level, but I often overlook the power of saving up for family fun.

A little while ago, I wrote a post about how I was saving for a family vacation to Disney World and I was only going to use the money I made from eBay.  I made a nice Mickey chart to keep track of my progress, and we finally filled it!  eBay is a great way to save money for fun activities, and now is the time to start thinking about what you are going to do this summer.  It doesn’t matter if you are planning a family get away or you just want to landscape your yard, eBay is the perfect place to start your journey. For me, I like to do the following:

  1. Figure out my plans for this summer
  2. do the research on the cost
  3. and then make an eBay plan

I end up finding myself weighing the pro’s and con’s of items that I have in my house.  I recently was looking at my Xbox 360, and was thinking that the experience of having a full day of fun at a water park plus a nice dinner out weighs the benifits of me playing games on it once a month.  Guess what, its going on eBay.  I’m at the point where I would rather have fun family experiences than material items that I don’t use a lot.  Amy does a good job at keeping me in check and doesn’t let me get rid of everything in our house, but finding items that you don’t use often and selling them on ebay is a great way to fund your summer fun!

To jump start your summer fun, eBay wants to give one lucky reader of this blog a $100 eBay gift card!  To enter to win is really simple!

  1. Leave a comment below and tell me about a recent eBay sale.

Thats it!  This contest will stay active until May 27th, but please remember to include your eBay ID!  Good Luck!

BTW, I am really missing your newsletter. I know you were having trouble a while back. I am able to see them only because Joseph W. Savage is posting most of them on his FB page: Working eBay – Tips & News Conversation

Hi Donna,

I think I may have found a solution. Still working a few bugs out, but you should receive my daily newsletter from here on out!

Hello I am new to selling on ebay but as I get ready to move out of my parents house at the age of 23 I look around at all my old toys which could be considered “vintage” now, how scary! My toys are vintage! I have a box full of little figures ranging from old McDonald’s toys to Disney figures and more! I recently listed a 2″ Disney PVC Figure of Figment the purple dragon from Disney World. I listed it starting at $5.99 because similar items have gone for about that. Well to my surprise, near the end of the auction two bidders got in a war for this item and the final bid ended up being $51.00!! It’s hard getting rid of childhood things that hold memories but I was soo excited becasue I knew that this Figment figure was going to a good home when the buyer left me feedback saying “Thank you so much!!! This little guy has a new home where he will be cherished!” That is why I am using ebay, to sell things I no longer need and being able to sell them to people who will truly appreciate them!
All the money I am making on ebay is going toward upcoming vacations and paying down my college loans. So hopefully some of those old toys will fetch a good price like Figment did :)

I love selling on eBay. It allows me to sell items as a business but also to clean out my closets without going thru the extensive work of a garage sale. Recently, I realized that I have a lot of old stuff. So much that I have no room for new. So instead of going to the thrift stores, I started listing my own old stuff and selling it for good money. A good example is a 2002 Starbucks mug. I sold it for $24.99. WOOHOOO.

Here’s the link

My eBay id is chachkiz.

Thanks for this wonderful blog.

I found two tea cup and saucer sets at Goodwill for $2.99 each, new in their boxes. Sold on eBay for a total of $150.00, and the buyer was thrilled! I also just found a “Crazy Cat Lady” action figure, new in package. They sell on eBay, but I’m going to hang it up somewhere in my house to remind me what my life could turn out like if I’m not careful! I am coloradobestfinds on eBay. Thanks!

I am just getting back into ebay, after taking a much too long break. I was selling movie and tv cast and crew stuff from shows I worked on. I made good money, but of course I have run low on inventory, since I left the biz several years ago. Your blog and it’s members are so inspirational, I am hoping to be able to get started again and make this my full time job. Thanks Tristen for all you do!

My favorite recent sale would have to be when I found an Applecare Imac protection plan (Sold for $120) for 3.99 at my local GoodWill. it was stuffed in a cardboard box with some random cordless house phones and cameras and I was shocked when I saw the price tag. I also recently doubled my money on a LV Women’s agenda , and sold an Apple Airport Express for $56 that I bought for 99 cents because they thought it was a charger :). I’ve been pretty pleased with my success thus far. I’ve found that my biggest money makers are my Ralph Lauren, and Tommy Bahama clothes. I’m on this site looking around just about everyday waiting for new posts. I just finished my first year of college, and my goal is to have college 100% paid for and have a nice chunk of money stashed aside for when my girlfriend of 5 years and I decide to get married. Don’t want to be worrying about financial issues at a time like that :). With your help my goal seems very realistic. Thank’s so much for all the valuable information Tristen. It is really helping me get started.

My most recent Ebay sale: I listed a couple of my extra Betsy McCall dolls (I love these little dolls!) on Ebay through my store yesterday. One sold within a few hours and the other sold this morning. Ebay is a wonderful way to turn extra items into cash. Ramona

I enjoy reading your helps keep me motivated and this tip about setting a goal and manage it like you did with the Mickey chart is GREAT! I sell on 2 IDs but my main ID is crochetpatty ….One of my recent sales was a unique antique green milk glass plate that we found in a box my dad had bought at an auction years ago…the color was very uncommon.. my sales lately are all going towards my daughter’s church camp fund…this will be the last year she can attend this local camp since she graduates from high school next year.. I let her pick out the items to be sold and the funds are going toward something special she wants… I am sure she will become an eBay seller as soon as she turns 18 :) ~Trish

My ebay id is amweeks. I recently purchased 5 Abercrombie & Fitch mens shirts at a yard sale for a total of $15. Turned around & sold them (in 3 separate lots) for a total of $85!

Pattijean May 17, 2012 at 1:19 pm

Hey have read your guide “Keys to a Successful eBay Business” from cover to cover three times and still getting new ideas every time I read it. Have sold 6 men’s golf shirts from Goodwill in the last 10 days so almost averaging one a day since I started. This is my small beginning goal and when reached will increase it to 2 a day, and so on. Selling most for 1 1/2 times – 2 times what I paid. Thinking outside the box have found a new source for deeply marked down designer menswear that I have so far tripled my money on the one item from this source that I have sold thus far. Am continuing to develop this source and looking forward to selling much more. I have even gotten an inquiry on one of my designer items from a potential buyer in RUSSIA, just today! My eBay ID is pattijeans. Thank you for all the information and inspiration you have shared.

Nancy May 17, 2012 at 1:22 pm

Hi there,
I just started selling on ebay (julesrae). So I’m super new and have a lot of learning to do. I love your website.
I have been selling coupons on ebay, not much in profit but I’m just trying to get my feet wet.
I hope one day I can quit my day job and stay home with my kids with the help of Ebay.

Laura May 17, 2012 at 3:17 pm

I think one of the most recently ended auctions that I remember quite fondly is a pair of jeans I paid $1 for….and they ended up at auction for over $31. Now if I could flip every pair like that…..

Hi Tristen. My eBay ID is Gully95. I have been selling quite a few vintage reel to reel tapes lately. Most are from American Airlines, and some of them have sold for $20, $30, and even $50. I’ve even shipped some of these to Italy! Old technology is still hot to some people.

Shannon Cullins May 17, 2012 at 4:56 pm

Hi my eBay ID. Sellinchic. I have been selling some winter clothing that had been in my store for a while. I have had some surgery and have spent the last few months dealing with that. I thought about closing store till I could list new items when I am better. Especially since I still had cashmere sweaters listed. Guess what? Within last few weeks they have sold! 2 went to different countries. I made money while I was on bed rest recovering! All the money I have made is going into my sons graduation present! Graduating high school on Monday. If I wouldn’t have made this money through eBay his gift wouldn’t be as nice. Now it’s time to save for vacation in July. Thanks eBay and thanks Tristen for this fab blog. I have learned a lot. Shannon

Karen May 17, 2012 at 5:31 pm

Hi Tristen,

I’ve had some good luck lately selling clothes. Our local thrift shops gave away a lot of inventory to make room for spring stuff, and I recently sold a pair of The Quacker Factory Women’s Plus Size Jeans for $20.50, a pair of Sketchers Sneakers for $15.99 and a pair of Naturalizer loafers for $12.99. Pure profit, aside from the eBay & PayPal fees.

On the yard sale front, I recently picked up some Conair Hot Rollers for $2 which I sold for $24.99 and a movie projector screen I got for $3 sold for $19.99. My eBay ID is kami6991. Oh, and I sold some Pringles Jalapeno snack sticks I picked up at Walmart for $3 for $9.99. I think they’ve been discontinued, and you know how people like their snack foods.

Anthony May 17, 2012 at 5:52 pm

Mark May 17, 2012 at 6:46 pm

Hey Tristen,
Your blog is one of the first I look at when have time to read a few.

My ebay name is cybersanford. I friend called me that when I was telling him all the crazy stuff I was selling on ebay way back in 1999. I immediatly changed my ebay name to that and think it fits me pretty good.

Recent ebay sale that kinda blew my mind. And got me to paying attention to these items. I was at an estate sale about 6 weeks ago and found 2 black T Shirts (perfect condition) in the closet. One was Elton John Tour shirt from 1992 and one was a Simpsons T shirt. (I can’t stand either the Simpsons or Elton John). But bought them for 50cents each.
Listed them on ebay for 9.99 each free shipping. Simpsons sold for 9.99 and Elton John sold for a whopping $46. I about fell out of my chair. Smiling of course.
here is the link to that listing, Not sure how this link stuff works , but here it is.

Keep up the good blog. We blogged quite a bit last year while traveling some, but have not done so since we got back home. Will kick it off again soon I’m sure.

Thanks for great blog.

Well… magazines have been my newest revolation for ebay selling. I actually got my hand on about 150 magazines that were going to be recycled, and as crazy as my husband thought I was for loading them all up and storing in them in my garage, its been a great money maker. Turns out I had about 15 Vogue issues from September 2011 with Kate Moss, and this cover is a big time in Demand issue. I have sold each one for $10-$15 per magazine. Not bad for getting them for free and turning them into cash. I am so glad I read your issue on back issues.

I have been selling new items for years, but have recently realized that I just can’t compete any longer with the big stores that are selling off their overstock on eBay. So I’ve been going to yard sales and thrift stores again….and I’m glad to find I haven’t lost my “eye!” Just recently sold a 1987 Roger Rabbit plush for $19.99 (paid .25), two Polaroid cameras for $39.95 each (paid $5.00 each), and I have so much more that I just need to get listed. What I’m loving is that things are selling quickly. I feel energized again. Found a Little Einsteins Pat Pat Rocket for $1.00 the other day!! delaynec on eBay.

I have recently begun selling my vast music collection because I know longer play the cds. Many of my cds seem to be rare and hard to find and have been selling internationally. Mind you some of the cds are well over twenty five years old and not always by the most popular artists, but are selling for at least 3 to 4 times what I paid for them in the 1980′s.

My seller id is bargains4all 64.

Hi Tristan,
First of all, thanks for all of the free information on your blog. However, I do have one question. Although many of your followers here are more than happy to post their Ebay shop name, I can’t for the life of me find yours. Why do you proudly post your Ebay store’s name on your blog?

Tristen OBrien May 21, 2012 at 10:27 am

Hi Sarah! I have a few ebay stores, and the one I do share on this forum is thefrugaltree. this is my clearance store and where I put all the items the don’t sell well. I’ve had problems in the past sharing my other to store names, and I also have some items on there that I have not shared with the community yet.

I purchased them for an average of $6 a piece and made $30 of profit on each one!

Ebay ID: Sushiboofay I’m just now getting back into selling, so haven’t really got any big news to share. I did sell a couple of Battletech Mechs a while back – some nice pocket change, but that’s about it!

Our eBay ID is ItsAllOurVault, and we recently sold a group of three antique cigar cutters. These things were massive! They were in the shapes of a bird, a dragon, and a horse. Really beautiful. :)

My ebay id is geogratia. And one of my most recent sales was a Royal Albert Blossom Time Tea Pot, which sold in just 2 days of being listed. I Love it when that happens. Crossing my fingers for that gift card.

My seller ID is TheFleasKnees. I just yesterday sold an American Eagle hoodie sweater for $14.99. I paid $3.00 for it at GW and wore it for two years! It did not sell all winter, and now that it is going to be a hundred degrees out this weekend, it sold. I leave all my winter items on Buy It Now because they do sell in the summer, too!

Tristen, I love your blog. I am still not receiving the daily emails though.

Keep up the great work, and God bless you and your family.

I got serious about selling on eBay last March. Was doing very well purchasing liquidated designer goods and reselling but hit a bump in the road in the fall and winter because I did not know what to try to sell. But I am back at it 100% now ….I like recently sold some Lucky Brand capri pants that I paid $2.77 (including shipping) during a lot purchase and sold them for $28.75.

Thank you for your inspiration and sharing your insight.

It’s been a pretty slow month for me :( I have had a couple of sales that I’ve done pretty well on though. My favorite is a lot of Vintage (70′s/early 80′s) Disney Wonderful World of Reading books. I picked the bulk on them (50) up at a consignment sale for $20 and the others I picked up for $.25 each and yard sales and thrift stores. All of the books were in amazing condition so I priced them high – $175 for (65) books with free media mail shipping. I received a couple of low ball offers the first week they were listed but declined. I’m glad I did because they sold for the full asking price in the first month. And even better, they sold to someone in my state making shipping less.

$175 – $14.46 (shipping) – $23.75 (initial investment) = $136.79 – $17.99 (ebay/paypal fees) = $118.80 profit! or $1.83 per book! That’s the kind of ROI I like to have.

I’ve been selling craft items and “collectibles” on ebay off and on for several years, but decided to get really serious about it this year–my husband had to take a $10,000 pay cut at the beginning of the year and we have a son who will be going to college in another year.

Found your blog and videos a couple weeks ago. I’ve really enjoyed them and have taken your advice to heart. Some of my recent sales based on your advice:

Whole Foods Bag – purchased for $0.99 – sold for $3.99
Polaroid Camera (didn’t know if it worked or not) – purchased for $1.99 – sold for $6.99
Ralph Lauren Polo Men’s Cardigan – purchased for $3.99 – sold for $16.80
Imodium Multi Symptom Relief – purchased 3 boxes for $37.95 – sold for $69.99
5 Bottles Chaser Plus – purchased for $6.64 each – sold all 5 in 1 week for $34.99 each
4 Way Fast Acting Nasal Spray – purchased for $12.96 – sold for $69.99

I’ve had a blast searching for and selling new items. Thank you, Tristan!!!!

I saw one of your videos in which you bought a calculator at a Goodwill. That day I went in and found a freaking calculator AND a credit card machine without it’s plug. I bought both for $4.00 total and sold both for $30.00 EACH! Completely awesome!

Today I read the As seen on TV and it reminded me of another one. My wife bought a storage unit that we thought was going to dud out. Then we found the Malibu Pilates machine. It sold for $275.00! We paid $225.00 for the locker so the rest was pure profits!

My ebay is morgan_enterprise, check out my completed and you will see them.

Hey, really love your blog! Been selling on eBay as a business for the last two months since first coming across your blog, purchasing your eBook and then trying a few items out after finding them at thrift stores. I was instantly hooked. I am having so much fun selling part time. A recent purchase was a brand new, factory sealed, not expired, toner cartridge for a Canon copier that I bought at Goodwill for $3.99 and it sold for $66. I would call that a home run! I have plenty more stories like that. Amazing what you can find and sell. My eBay Id: truebrewhahaha. Thanks Tristen!
